Info on Chemical Peels...thoughts on em?

I'm 16 and thinking about getting a chemical peel a mild one...I went to my dermatologist and they gave me a pill and differein and it worked and now my face is cleared up...she told me that even if you don't pop pimples it still leaves a mark..mine aren't fading AT ALL...so she suggested I get a chemical peel...any thoughts on it? how are the results? does it work? hurt? price?

  1. doesn't work, waste of money
  2. dont believe in putting that crap on your face, use all natural masks and scrubs instead
  3. If you are seriously considering this have it done by a dermatologist and not at a spa or salon. To really get rid of scaring will probably require a fairly strong peel depending on the depth of your scares and your skin type and tone. Chemical peels can be extremely dangerous if the wrong type is used or if the person doing it is not highly trained and highly knowledgeable. You could go in to clear your surface scarring and end up seriously scared for life with a botched peel. I have seen the results of some of these and it is extremely hideous and incredibly sad for the person involved. The situation is even more critical because you are so young. Don't go cheap go to a licenced dermatologist and have it done, remember you will have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life. I would exhaust all other methods before I went down that road, try pure vit E oil first. Hope this helps.
  4. I don't know if you are referring to actual scarring or the redness that is left for awhile after the pimple heals. If it is only discoloration, do not go for a peel - this will fade, believe me. Scarring is a different story, and a peel (or series) may help. I had a deep phenol peel for acne scarring - a painful procedure, with a very frightful appearance for weeks afterward. It improved them, but also removed a lot of the natural pigmentation from my face. Look into lighter chemical peels, or laser treatments, even a series of microdermabrasions.
  5. I have nice skin, and I get a chemical peel every 6 mos. just for upkeep, I wouldn't say it's painful, but it is uncomfortable for like a day afterwards, after that it will peel for like 5 days, but you will be so happy with the results that you just won't care, it's fabulous! About $250.00. Good Luck!
  6. I have actually been thinking of getting a chemical peel myself but for hyperpigmentation (dark patches of skin) and a sallowness that I have. I have read or heard that the 'light' or 'mild' peels such as the glycolic peels do not make much of a difference but that the tca (medium depth) chemical peel can make a noticeable difference in the texture and such. It doesn't necessarily mean that one will not get blemishes again though which the derm may have mentioned. The tca peel is supposed to have a down time of about 7-10 days of not going out into the sun and while the skin finishes peeling (Not allowed to pull skin as can cause infection and scarring.) Please only go to a board-certified dermatologist to have this done. There is a great website with various message boards on different cosmetic procedures including chemical peels at www.makemeheal.com (free to register and can click on 'message boards') though please do Not purchase the tca or other agents for chemical peels from online and do them at home but instead get it done at the derm's office as even in the most capable of hands, scarring or infection can occur. I was quoted a price of $800 for the tca peel, but I'm sure that it can vary among the various derm's. And on the makemeheal board, some were disappointed with the microdermabrasion and that it left them with hyperpigmentation as did laser resurfacing on other postees. It's great that you are doing your homework, and you may want to get a couple or few different opinions and ask for 'before and after' photos and references of previous patients. (And please remember Not to pop or pick at your blemishes regardless if the derm said that a mark will appear as to lessen the probability that a scar or mark will be left.)
  7. Avon has a product that is like a chemical peel but you don't have to go to the doctor's. Maybe you could try that first before you get the real thing so you don't have to pay so much for it. I've seen it priced at $25. Its called Advanced Retexturizing Peel. You could find it by going to www.youravon.com/bbledsoe Good Luck
  8. May I suggest Mary Kay's Velocity Line for the younger and more delicate skin. Chemical peels are very harsh, you want something to be gentle but effective.
