Is my son getting bovine growth hormone from my breast milk?

He is growing SO FAST! I crave milk and am drinking at least a quart a day. Is growth hormone somehow getting into my breast milk and making him grow faster. This is my first so maybe it is normal for them to grow this fast I wouldn't know.

  1. Good question. Doesn't sound very likely but if you are worried, maybe start buying organic milk or drink soy milk.
  2. What do you mean by growing fast? My daughter was gainig almost 3 pounds a month for quite a while she is fine I doubt he is getting any horomones from the milk
  3. I don't know... but if so he'd get more if you gave formula.... so continue breastfeeding the milk is good for you.. give you calcium and protien and the extra calories to breastfeed
  4. Ummm...I don't know? Babies grow really fast my baby gained 4.5 lbs and grew 5.5 inches in he first 10 weeks (breastfed). I crave milk all the time too, I have since I got pregnant, and I only drink Oakhurst Milk (the natural goodness of Maine!) and they only use milk from farmers who pledge not to use growth hormone. So since I definitely don't consume bovine growth hormone and I drink/crave lots of milk and my baby grows fast, I would bet it's probably not the growth hormone. If you are worried, there are products out there without bovine growth hormone...all organic milk should be hormone free.
  5. Seriously? Bovine is cow. Unless you eat unspeakable amounts of fast food, no, your son is not getting any hormones from cows via your breasts. If you're truly worried about the near-zero chance of BGH being the culprit of your son's normal growth, go organic. It never hurt to eat healthier anyway.
  6. Bovine growth hormone sounds a lot scarier than it is. It is a protein that is given to cows to speed up milk production, but there is very little proof that this protein is passed on in the milk and even less proof that it effects humans. Basically, our bodies naturally break it down without any effects to us. If you search, you'll find a lot of sites that sound scary, but none can cite a conclusive scientific study that proves that BGH treatment to cows affects humans in any way. The real problem behind BGH is that it is taxing and can cause several health problems to the cows it's used on. These problems are treated with antibiotics which can show up in the milk that they produce. Unless a dairy is careful, this can get passed on to consumers and it's the antibiotics, not the BGH that can harm you. In the US and Europe, milk in stores is very highly regulated. Milk companies do extensive research on the effects of BGH. They also make a serious effort to separate out any antibiotic tainted milk before it reaches stores. However, if you're really afraid of it and would rather avoid it all together, buy organic milk. There is no way that a dairy can claim its milk is organic if they use BGH. Standard practice for most organic farms is also to keep cows treated with antibiotics out of production for several months to a year, just to make sure their milk is safe.
