Banana Peels dangerous to touch bought from grocery store in USA or Canada?
I'm curious to know where people are getting the information from that banana peels are dangerous to touch? It's not like we're going out in the bush, climbing the trees and getting them ourselves. Can someone please help me in retrieving information, if any exists, on how banana peels are dangerous to touch? In other words, if after someone peels a banana, should they be running to the sink and washing their hands? is there any factual data to support this?

- Never heard of this before.Nothing has happened to me and I peel quite a few.My roses are happy too with the potassium.I'd like to know more.
- im eating bananas all my life,of course i have to touch the skine off it,never get sick. dont know were this is come from ,,but is just stupit
- I was told by my daughter's doctor that while banana's are being picked the men/women who pick them, are out there all day doing so. When they have to go to the rest room, there is no bath room per say to go to, so they have to relieve them selves where ever they can. Thus they do not wash their hands after wards. We should wash banana's BEFORE peeling them, so that if there are any germs on the peelings they can be washed away before we open the peeling and expose the fruit to unwanted yuk. Their not dangerous, just dirty. We should always wash our fruit and veggies before eating, because, well, we just do not know what all they go through to get to our table now do we.
- There could be ecoli on the banana peel from someone who hadn't washed their hands after using the bathroom and then handled the banana and then when you peel the banana your hands have been contaminated and when you put the banana in your mouth from your contaminated hands, you could get ecoli, which could be life threatening. Wash those bananas.
- Yet another reason to stop buying crap from the Turd World. It's either got ecoli poop germs all over it, or it's full of lead.
- Like virtually all fresh produce, bananas are picked in the field (no kidding!), where the pickers do not have access to bathrooms with running water. It's possible, though not probable, that various bacteria could be transferred from pickers' hand to fruit, including bananas. However, your body can deal with bacteria pretty handily if you expose it to a variety. It's like a boxer sparring daily. When a real match comes along, he's strong and ready. Your body's ability to fight infection is the same. If sanitizing products and excessive use of soap have kept you from "sparring," when the match against a serious bacteria like e. coli comes along, you're weak, out of practice, and lose quickly. You should be fine if you wash your hands several times in the course of a typical day (like every time you use the bathroom) or just before handling food, and again after food handling. Wash produce that's visibly dirty or shows signs of pesticide residue.
- This is new to me...
- Never heard that unless you're worried about e-coli from non-clean hand picking them. Although there is a spider that lives in banana trees and it is the most poisonous in the world and there is nothing to cure you from it's bite. It apparently kills a human in less than 2 minutes
