Orange peel and scratches all over new 06 Dodge Durango?

O.k. I'm having a problem and a hard time understanding how it is that a brand 2006 Dodge Durango (black) that I just picked up 2 wks. ago has a paint job that is bumpy kind of wavey looking and when the sun hits it there are scratches from front to back of the truck. The scratches in the paint almost have a swirled effect. The dealer applied teflon on it, wheeled it out, but the scratches are still there. The head of the body shop said it is "orange peel", however I do not understand what could of caused the scratches which are under the clear coat? If it was a "bad wheel" job wouldn't be over the clear coat? Anyhow they say that a Chrysler Rep. would have to o.k. them to repaint the truck...and they said they absolutely cannot give us a new truck because the sale/lease and vin. # has already been reported to Chrysler. What exactly is orange peel and what could of caused the scratches under the clear coat?

  1. take it back... it sounds like you are being ripped off
  2. if it is orange pealing, it has been repainted, and improperly prepped before. Orange peel is a result of the paint not adhering properly to the surface below the paint. It is usually due to an oily surface, or even a surface which is too smooth, like painting over an old coat of paint without sanding first. I would tell them, regarding their excuse of reporting a # to chrysler, to report a new number. I'm sure they can change it. It sounds like they were able to get rid of a problem on you, and don't want the problem back.
  3. Are there lemon laws where you live? Don't take it. A re-paint job will lower the value more than the scratches. You got a bad deal and need to return it.
  4. "Orange peeeling" as it is refered to is very common with Chrysler products! The "swirls" are from the prep man using a rotary polisher on the vehicle. And of course, everyone knows or should know "black" shows everything! Chrysler will give you the run around because that is their normal policy of doing business! You accepted the vehicle from the dealer and probably signed something that will allow them immunity from their sleezy policies! That's why I stopped purchasing Dodge trucks many years ago and went with Chevy!
  5. lemon laws will NOT apply to this circumstance and as a matter of fact are very hard to get to come into play. Go to another dealer and have them look at it. The paint is under warranty, and should be fixed good as new. It wont lower the value any if its done properly. truth be known there are quite a few # of new vehicles that have paint work done on them at dealerships. this is casued by transport damage, dents, scuffs, scrapes happen while getting vehicles to the dealer location. then dealers have them fixed. Your concern is warrantable with Chrysler, now just finding a nice honest and caring dealership is your goal. you can always file a CAIR at any dealership, which will get work done...Ask a service manager about them if you have no luck.
  6. for real, I would get rid of the truck, ok, first go to www.carfax.com, run the VIN in there and see what comes up, it will cost you about $20, but if anything happened, you will have proof of it, but remember, not everything gets reported on there... For example, i wrecked the entire right front of my car, i redid everything myself, so it will never show as being wrecked. Anyway, what the swirl marks are is where somebody had washed the truck, and used like a bath towel to dry it, the towel ends up scratching the paint. which is why they are in a circular pattern. Orange peel is a defect of a paint job, to make it simple, go get and orange and look at it, you see how the texture looks? it has like a raised and lowered texture, paint does the same thing, which is why painters wet sand the car after painting to get rid of this. However, a car manufacturer has a multi-million dollar paint setup, using robots to paint the car, this usually eliminates the orange peel, but not always, but anyway, i am getting off subject, run the carfax on it, see if anything bad has happened to it, ask the dealer where they got the car, remember that now is a bad time to buy a car, because all them Katrina cars will be flooding the market, they go grab them, clean them, dry it out, put a $100 paint job on it and sell it. Run the car fax, and see whats up.....
  7. have a Dodge dealer friend, he says take it to another dealer. This is not an unusual pro blem and can be covered under factory warranty.
