Would I get a sweet & sour taste if I friend chicken in orange peels?

Please let me know what your trick is- no need to cut and paste a recipe- and I do not like pre-packaged sauces! Thanks.

  1. No you wouldnt, I dont think... But if you squeezed the orange, and used the juice, and added some mustard and catsup, you would get a s/sour sauce...... can also add lemon juice and brown sugar... good luck
  2. Orange peels and Pineapples are the way to go... at least thats what I use.
  3. i would deep fry the chicken first then toss it in a sweet and sour mix. use one cup sugar and one cup water and dissolve over heat with orange peels, juice of one lime, and dried red chilis. throw some corn starch in there if its not super thick. toss chicken with this mixture in a wok or satue pan.
  4. Orange peels will give a strong orange flavor. The juice will add sweetness. But any sweet, juicey fruit will work. Pineapple is classic. Use a little ketchup or a tomato based sauce to give a little body to the juice. For the "sour" add a little vinegar. I like red wine with garlic vinegar but any will work. Rice wine vinegar is very light flavored.
  5. You can't really fry in orange peels. You fry in an oil or fat. If you add orange peels to the oil, you would get an orange zest flavor to the oil from the oil in the zest. A better way to get this flavor is to grate the zest over the chicken after its cooked through. The white pith of the orange has a bitter flavor, and the peels could burn in the hot oil. If you want to make a sweet-sour sauce, you need to add something sweet and something sour. Try a half and half mix of orange juice and lemon juice. Add sugar, brown sugar or honey until it tastes nicely sweet-sour. Add salt and pepper to season. When your chicken is cooked through, remove it from the pan, add the sweet-sour sauce to the pan and cook it down a bit to thicken. Add orange zest if you like and adjust seasoning. Pour over the chicken and serve. You can also mix a little chicken stock into your sweet-sour sauce for more dimensions to the flavor. And if you want to thicken it a bit, mix a little cornstarch with a little cold water and whisk it into the simmering sauce. Best, Brad
  6. well, the orange part of the peel is called the zest, and has the flavor, the white part i think is called the pith, and is yucky tasting. i looked to see if i could find anything to help you, and most of the recipes also called for orange juice. personally, i prefer to use tangerines when i want citrus, but i do know the peel is to be used sparingly or else that's all you'll taste. why not try it on just 1 or 2 pieces and see what you come up with. try adding a little honey and wine. i'd bet mandarin oranges would be good, but i don't know about frying them.
  7. no. it all about seasoning. if you like to make it from scratch try honey or sugar. depends on your taste bud if you like the sweet sour taste to it then its good. put also a little orange juice. i make sure i cook the chicken real good.. maybe olive oil some salt and pepper. then boil the peelings. on a separate pot for your sauce with a little water and orange juice. put them together, and then season it according to your taste bud.i think. That's how i make it sometimes. make sure you do not mix the peelings with the food it'll taste bitter.
