Best Way to Orange Peel a ceiling or wall?

I hate the popcorn looking stuff on my ceilings. Removing it is not the hard part. I have been looking to find a way to orange peel my ceiling but have had not luck. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

  1. My painter used thinned-down, Redi-Mixed wallboard joint compound. The consistency should be like pancake batter. Apply the compound to the ceiling using a 3/8" nap roller. The coarser the roller sleeve is, the more pronounced the orange-peel texture. Make certain that the ceiling is compltely dry before painting. And when you paint, paint light, don't saturate the new textured medium or it could lift off. However, have you considered just covering the ceiling with vintage-looking tiles? Armstrong offers an attractive line that is on display at Home Depot and Lowe's. They look cool. Some of the designs have a contemporary look. They don't look hard to apply or cut to fit around the borders of the room.
  2. this is an art form done by drywall finishing pro's. look under DRYWALL in the yellow pages then look for someone that does KNOCK-DOWN.
  3. There is a spray on texture made by Homax that replicates the orange peel effect. I've never used it, but have seen it in my local hardware store. A 20oz can will do 100sqft of ceiling or wall space.
  4. Home Depot carries a texture wall paint. You paint it on with a special type of paint roller, then you can modify the effect depending on the look you want. It comes in a 2 gallon plastic container. I think there are 3 different types depending on how much texture you're after. After we rolled it on, we knocked it down with a wet sponge to get the orange peel effect. You should clean and prime the surface before putting on the texture. There are also spray cans for doing orange peel texture but they can get a bit pricey if you're doing a large area.
  5. This is best achieved by using a hopper type texture gun. However this is not for the unexperienced. You can purchase this device at a Home Depot for about 75.00. You will also need an air compressor and a few other tools. It is not that easy to do. Consistency is the trick to success. You might want to consider a knock down finish instead. It is much easier to do and more common for a ceiling than an orange peel is. A knock down finish is a orange peel that is lightly flattened with a taping knife before it drys. Think about it.
