why is my skin peeling and hardning around my belly button piercing?

i got my belly button pierced about 2 weeks ago. i have been cleaning it twice a day morning and night with dial soap. now my skin is peeling, even where it isnt pierced. and the skin around the piercing is hardening. it isnt as sore as before. Is this normal?

  1. This peeling and hardening could just be effects of the piercing. I'd give it a little more time, and follow the directions the place you got it pierced at gave you to maintain cleanliness. This should go away, as I remember that happened to my sister's belly button too. hope this helps! :D
  2. You were washing it too much! the water and soap was drying it out, put vitiman e oil on it, and only wash it like for a little once a day! Good Luck!
  3. it's normal because it is healing.. it will get back to its normal skin elasticity so don't worry.
  4. The peeling is because the soap is drying the skin in the area (it's too harsh because it's both chemical- and alcohol-based). Switch to a sea salt rinse for the remaining few weeks and use some unscented lotion around (but not on) the skin in the area of the piercing. The hardening is your body building up scar tissue/fistula in the piercing and is completely normal. Sea salt rinse mixtures are as follows: 1/4 tsp sea salt to 1 cup distilled water 2 tbsp sea salt to 1 gallon distilled water 1/3 tsp sea salt to 1 pint water (such as aquafina/arrowhead/evian bottles to carry with you).
