Advice on an aging Great Dane??
The statistics say the average age for a Great Dane is approx 8yrs. Mine is 4 1/2 & is meeting that average. She is sick right now & on antibiotic for another 3ks. She really has no desire to eat right now & has lost 10lbs. Any tricks besides human food? Also she has bad hips. Any advice on that? She already take RX anti-inflammatory med. She has also developed skin irritations. Please help!!! She means the world to me & I would love the advice. thank you

- If you're having trouble getting her to eat, offering cooked meats might help. Maybe try mixing some meat fats into her normal food to make it more appealing? I also came across a brand of food that my cats really adored - I offered them a free sample I got and it was gone in literally 30 seconds. I don't know if their dog food is any good, but you might want to try offering brands of food like James Wellbeloved. It's nice natural food without any artificial preservatives and is apparently really delicious...
- I would put her on glucosamine for her joints. As for her weight...I'd ask your vet, maybe she just has no appetite bacause she feels like crap. My dane is 4 and I've had no problems so far. I was told that if you add cream cheese to their diet it will help them gain weight. I'd really get in touch with your vet, they'll be able to steer you in theright direction. Good luck and I hope she's better really soon.
- Dogs can have some people food. You might want to consider fixing some peas, carrots & rice. Steam the vegetables and rice and if the dog eats it add some of the dog food to that mixture. They are a lot like people when they don't feel good they will eat very little.
- warm shampoo with a good flea soap for skin ask Drr for more pain medication i here MSM. is good for arthritis i would try it . hope your love gets better
- When I had sick dogs who didn't want to eat, my vet recommended boiling rice and hamburger and adding that to their food. And it worked, it got them to eat. Or how about some low-fat cottage cheese or non-fat, no-sugar yogurt, both of which are good for digestion? As for her bad hips, how bad? You need to follow your vet's advice as to exercise or perhaps giving her glucosamine. Is she in pain or is it controlled with her meds? Also, your vet should be able to control her skin irritations. Sounds like she's having a really rough time right now, but you're taking good care of her and she'll get through this. I've had a dog who was so sick I knew where that expression "sicker than a dog" came from and he pulled through. Think positive!
- Some Danes with good care can go to age 10 or 12. We have a breeder in our rescue group. She says to give a Dane cooked pasta to gain weight, just a hand full a day. As for the hips, I had a dog with bad hips and a bad back. I looked into and had Gold Bead Implants done. She had been on Deramax daily for pain. After the implants, she never needed another pain pill. GBI are a permanent form of acupuncture. There is a lot on the net about it so go and do some research.
