what can I do about a neighbor down the road that has 5 labrador retreivers caged 24/7?
They are always waiting at the door of the cage but no one ever seems to go to them. they dont look sick, but are severely neglected. My state has no laws about this-as long as they have food and water and a shelter, nothing can be done. I drive by and am sick about it. The people do not seem at all like they would be receptive to any suggestions from a neighbor. Is there anything I can do for these poor animals? They are there year in year out, in the freezing cold and in the blistering heat. Thanks for any sympathy you may give but I am looking for some real solutions I can put in place. btw, I have already called all the authorities, animal control etc to no avail. Even a very concerned woman on the board of directors couldnt help. Any creative ideas out there to help these poor unfortunate creatures??

- BECAUSE IT IS NOT YOUR DOG YOU CANT DO NOTHING OH SORRY YOU CAN YOU CAN TELL THE SPCA OR I DONT KNOW
- is there a roof over their head? if not, then call a humane society. also, what would be the point of them living in a cage like that?
- This is animal cruelty!!! THE ANIMAL CONTROL SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!! they dont deserve this. poor doggies. i would sneak them out. but i dont no. THIS IS SO WRONG!! call the humane society! i bet they will do something about it!
- well i would look to see if they do always have food water and a dog house for cold weather.. // tarp on top to keep out the rays of sun.. i would maybe go to the owners of the dogs themselves and see if they even want the animals anymore. maybe they dont? you could pay a ransom and find them new homes? ya never know
- Well a good friend of mine was in the same situation a few years back. On her way to work every day, she would drive by the same abandoned farm house that had a dog tied up on a chain, undernourished, neglected, and without shelter. After a few weeks of driving by this poor dog, she started to drop food off for him. Then one day, she'd had a pretty crappy day at work, and she just picked him up, took him to the vet (told them she found him), and took him home with her. I am sure she saved this dog's life.
- Well, you can either call an the ASPCA (depending where u live.) . Even though they don't look sick, doesn't mean they aren't. Or you can talk to the neighbors, ask them whats happening. If nothing works out, maybe you can help some when the people are gone. When its hot, maybe you can help them get some shade. When its cold, I don't know what you could do.
- i dont think is anything u CAN do. just hope for the best.
- aww, i wish people didn't do this to puppys =[ your good for wanting to help. have you tried talking to the owners? tell them what you think.. and offer to take the pups and find them better homes, or even keep some! also give them frequent love and attention.. whenever you walk by pet them and give them some treats or maybe toys =] i hope you can help them! , also if its cold or hot you can get them heat/cold pads that they can lay/sleep on to stay warm or cool =] Good luck and i hope you get some good ideas from Y! answers, and that you can find a way to help them! Best of luck to you and the pups! <3 Kellie
- I don't know, my first suggestion would be to call animal control services but I guess they can't do anything of it is not illegal. I would let the dogs out and take them to a shelter than adopt them myself. (hehe) Or let them loose (if there is no key) and then call the police and say they are strays then take tell the police about a NO-KILL shelter. They'll make sure the dogs are re-homed nicely - or at least better than where tehy are now) Or go talk to the neighbour and ask him if he has enough him if he has enough time to take care of them. If he says no than offer to take care of his dogs or maybe its better to give them up. Say it nicely or he'll be really defensive! Good luck :) btw VERY responsible of you to do this. I'm glad there's people like you in this world and not people like him!
- I would suggest to the people that you would volunteerly play and walk the dogs. Don't be suggestive. Just go over there like happy go lucky sort of way and say that you need a hobbie or something and want to walk their dog. If that doesn't work idk good luck
- Call the Local Media, Or create a myspace and take pictures and start a blog about it. Once you have the public attention you can go anywhere with it. Call the local humane Society and have them investigate. I'd still call the local media... That should give the owner a wake up call. You would be amazed at what animal lovers can accomplish together.
- That is right down nuts for someone to treat their dogs like that. Don't want you to get in trouble if you got into the property and took the dogs and took them to be adopted out. I think its just cruel on these owners to cage them up. It would really bother me too if I was to see something like that. The people behind me will leave their chihuahuas out in the thunderstorm and when its cold. I feel bad for them too. They are mean little dogs too. I have never done anything about it. Usually they are in the yard, garage, or running at large.
- If you have a dog you can go and say you've been looking for a playmate for your dog and was wondering if they'd let you take their dogs over to your house or for a walk every once in a while so they could get out and have some fun. If you don't want to do that I'd just watch them constantly and the minute they seem to be lacking something, whether it is water/shelter from the sun or cold call animal control to come and check it out.
- If the guy is a hunter there is nothing you can do-they think this is better for the dogs. You don't say if they are kenneled in runs or caged in small cages. Small cages -you can get a local humane society to work on that for lack of space. If they are in kennels that won't work.
- There IS something you can do. Copy and print or retype this poem. Either send it to the owners' house or just put it in his mailbox. You decide how many times you wish to repeat sending this poem and you can tweak the poem to fit these circumstances. You can put an extreme amount of effort into this by obtaining pictures of Retrievers and presenting it in their mailbox in a gift-like form. Whatever you can do to call to their attention, I guess, is God's work so make it good : I wish that someone would tell me what it is that I've done wrong. Why I have to stay chained up and left alone so long. They seemed so glad to have me when I came here as a pup. There were so many thing we'd do while I was growing up. They couldn't wait to train me as a companion and a friend. And told me how they'd never fear being left alone again. The children siad they'd feed me and brush me every day. They'd play with me and walk me if I could only stay. But now the family "hasn't time" They often say I shed. They do not want me in the house, not even to be fed. The children never walk me. They always say, "Not now!" I wish that I could please them. Won't someone tell me how? All I had, you see, was love. I wish they would explain why they said they wanted me, Then left me on a chain. My short story: My son's immediate next door neighbor just left Shadow out in the cold and rain. Shadow eventually began to cry OUT LOUD over ear mites. The owners did nothing. My son broke open a slat of the privacy fence and allowed Shadow to come to his yard and enjoy his his and enjoy his pup-treats just like Shadow was one of the family. Shadow got brushed, got loving and got ear-mite medicine. Shadow stopped crying. It is hard for me to internalize how people who own animals think. We still had no clue why they thought all of this neglect was ok. But, they did not put up any fuss or argument when we took matters into our own hands......to give Shadow relief. Perhaps you can also ask by knocking on their door if you can take the pups out for a walk-one at a time or three at a time. BOTTOM LINE: If you have a conscience, and apparently you do, you must keep on thinking of ways to get through to these people. Are they breeding for money? Write to your local newspaper. Call your local news. Bring about public attention. Ask what is the price. Get ugly. I believe, whole-heartedly, that your community has no law against keeping dogs in a cage as long as they are fed and appear healthy. God has sent you on a mission, my friend. KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND CONFRONT THEM IF NECESSARY. Make your approach not obvious. Invite them too a cook-out. Make friends first, maybe and then try to get them to examine the problem. Some people are just idiots. It has all to do with how they were raised and their societal-views on any given subject. Shadow's owners would not sell her. I think they truly believed she had the run of the yard in all temperatures and that they were good pet-owners. They didn't complain that the privacy fence was broken. Incidentally, I am the mother of the son who lives next to Shadow and I am the one who supplied the ear mite product and the flea spray for a number of years. My son gave love and attention but does not have the finances to support 2 dogs but does have the caring heart to let me know what is going on. Shadow has not been seen for a couple of weeks. Shadow has not been seen for a couple of weeks. guadalcanal.baby@yahoo.com Be in touch concerned lover I pray I have helped.
