making cosmetics: how to get the job?

I really like chem. And I like making things. and in the future I want to make cosmetics. Like lotion, perfume, and anti age stuff, ect... What do I have to study in university? What r they looking for? Do u need physics? do you need fashion backround? do u need to work in their store as a sales associate first then move up? is new york the best place to work for this type of job? is it a competitive field?

1. My aunt is a chemist who creates fragrances for brand name perfumes, lotions, detergents, shampoos, etc. in New York. She has her PhD in Chemistry. She has worked for this company for over 20 years and I believe she got the job thru networking. No, she definately does not have a fashion background (although she is an owner of quite an Hermes handbag collection). She is well compensated.
