Dosage of glucosamine for dog?
I have a 65 lb. dog who yesterday started wincing and having a hard time going up stairs, out of the blue. Took him to emergency vet, did x-rays, said it may be spondyliosis causing the pain, otherwise everything else checks out. No signs of arthritis or trauma. (We are thinking it may be a pulled muscle, but who knows for sure). Dog is about 7 (rescue, so not sure of exact age). Vet gave me some anti-inflammatory pills but pup is still in pain when he rises or attempts stairs. Thought I should try getting him on glucosamine immediately - what dose is safe to give him, as I plan to get them at the local health food store, not pet store? I will be returning to vet Monday if he is still in pain, but thought the glucosamine would not hurt to be started immediately.

- depends on how much is in the capsule also depends on the weight of your dog. go to the pet store or website say of...COSEQUIN and look up the dosage and analysis of each capsule and compare that to the human ingredients
- All of my greys are on glucosamine chondroitin with MSM. When they first started having problems, the vet said to give them 1500 mg daily (they're 70 pounds), then decrease to 1000. The glucosamine chondroitin takes about 6 weeks to take affect and help the dog, but it will definitely help. If your dog is still in a lot of pain from those spurs, it might be possible that acupuncture will help him. My 3 have calcium deposits causing them a great deal of pain, which is a bit different from bone spurs, but if acupuncture can help them (and it's keeping my dogs 100% pain free), it might be worth while looking into it for your dog.
- Our older dogs 40 lb dogs get one 500mg capsule once a day. One of our dogs who we know has arthritis in a hip and knee also gets 1000mg MSM and 1000mg of fish oil. I use Spring Valley, which you can find in your vitamin section at WalMart. Make sure you double the dose of the glucosamine for the first seven days. Hope your dog feels better soon!
- My 20 lb. dachshund gets 1/2 of a 500 mg. tablet, so yours can easily get 2 entire ones, for 1000 mg. Metacam helps for this kind of pain in dogs, it's what I give mine when he has a spell of stiffness and discomfort. You need to get this from your vet, costs a bit more than Rimadyl, but works better and less side effects. Give the glucosamine at least a month, it does help, but it takes time. I buy mine at Walmart, human quality but far cheaper than health food or pet store, and just as good. Good luck, thank you for being such a caring responsible pet owner, your dog is very fortunate.
- Our 2 year old lab that is about 95 lbs takes chews that the vet recommended (Synovi G3 chews) everyday. For the first month we had double the dosage to get it in his system then after the first month he only needed two. We were able to purchase them from the vets office. My dog loves them, he thinks they are a treat. They have made a big difference! Ask your vet when your return on monday to make sure you are giving the correct dosage.
