Is it better to eat the orange peel or to take it off?
I've always wanted to know this. My co-workers eat dried orange peels.
Public Comments
- I would peel it
- You should take the peel off.
- All the nutrition is always in the peel of any fruit or veggie!!!!
- Peel it. The white part (the pith) is VERY bitter. I'm guessing that they're eating candied orange peel-which has had a ton of sugar added to it, and is actually pretty good stuff. The very thin outside layer is good to eat-people usually use it as a flavoring agent-orange zest, and that can be candied as well.
- YOU should eat the peels and throw out the Orange.
- It's probably a whole lot healthier to eat the peel, but I don't think I would survive the flavor.
- Eat the peel, it is high in vitamin C. It is good for you. it is also good that your co-workers are eating the peels too.
- Peel it; the peel is high in fiber, but not much else; you can use it in sauces, salads or relishes.
- Although it is done in some cultures like Africa, I wouldn't eat orange peels myself, they're very bitter. If you DO want to eat them, you might peel the orange , scrape off most of the white part, then slice the orange part into matchsticks. They might be good tossed into a salad or in oatmeal. I'd try simmering them with raisins in a little sugar and water, maybe with some cinnamon. (I haven't tried it- don't know WHAT would happen.) But what ever you do WASH THAT ORANGE FIRST- they probably spray or coat them. You CAN eat Kumquat fruits whole (they're those little things like oranges, the size of a large grape) the outside is bitter, the inside is sweet. Very interesting to eat.
- peel it its nasty without are you like 2 years old?
