Let me try this one again- Protected Classes? How is this concept anti-discrimination?
I am not saying that discrimination isn't wrong. Far from it. I strongly agree with our anti-discrimination laws and believe that everyone should be treated equal. But there is a flip side to this. I believe that treating everyone equally is defined by both bad treatment and good treatment. How does one particular race, sex, age, or belief render a person more protection, special benefits, or more freedom of speech? How is the recognition of "protected classes" anti-discrimination? My opinion- it isn't. Giving a person certain freedoms pertaining to speech in the workplace or stronger job protection based on the above characteristics is complete and utter discrimination against a person that does not meet the "protected classes" qualifiers. And no- I haven't been wronged or hurt or unjustly accused of anything recent or in my past. I am just thinking about the direction that our culture is going. And it seems wrong to me...

- I must have missed something... I just logged on and saw your question. what are "Protected classes"? I have never heard of this, so I am a little lost.
- I'm a lesbian and I don't believe in protected classes. I think that calling someone a dick is just as bad as calling a gay man a fag. I think that by having protected classes you just continue to set those people apart from society. I also believe that anyone can say whatever they want, even if it's offensive to myself, because you can't pick and choose what you call free speech.
- It's called a pendulum swing. Things are seldom fair, they go from one extreme to another. There was a gay man murdered in Texas in the early 80's while leaving a gay bar. 3 men jumped him, beat him up, raped him, and killed him. The judge let them off because they said the man tried to have sex with them. They were on probation, but never served a day in jail. Now, they would stay behind bars twice as long as a "Normal" hate crime. To me, all murders are hate crimes.
- People do not legally have more freedom of speech or job protection in the workplace than others. The idea of "protected classes" simply says that there are people who have been discriminated against and continue to be discriminated against. Those "protected classes" aren't really protected. Otherwise the "protected classes" would have all the jobs, right? The "protected classes" is supposed to keep folks from being attacked even more than they already are. Doesn't happen much, but that's the idea. And please leave your anecdotal evidence at home.
