Is Using Sand As an Exfoliant along with a facial cream a Bad Thing?

I want to MAKE a natural facial scrub. Got any suggestions?

Public Comments

  1. no. sand is known to be a natural exfoliant.
  2. OUCH - sand is WAY too harsh! You'll be ripping up live cells along with your dead ones. Grind up some oats (like porridge oats) and use that instead.
  3. Yes, sand can tear you. As can crushed fruit pits. I would suggest something like small tapioca beads. They are round and don't contain jagged edges.
  4. Sugar is a MUCH better alternative to sand for an exofoliant. Sand has been used in some cultures, but it needs to be VERY FINE sand. You could also try ground up almonds or walnuts.
  5. i wouldn't use sand.
  6. i don't think that is a good idea. if i were you i would make a face scrub with oatmeal and leave it sit on till it is almost dried. mix the oatmeal to wear when you put it on the spoon it will not drip off. you the oatmeal to be able to stay on your face and not run off. after you are done with that i would use a good face cream. if you have baby oil in the house mix it with the oatmeal and you can skip the face cream from the store. baby oil will give you the moisture back in your skin.
  7. Use baking soda. Mix a small amount in your palm along with your regular face wash. It is a great exfoliator. Sand will be too harsh and make your skin raw and susceptible to breakouts.
  8. Sand is actually silica (same stuff as glass) and has very sharp edges. It will severely damage your skin. Many "natural" exfoliants are made from things like crushed nutshells (walnuts and almonds are common as they also contain oils very beneficial to the skin) and sea salt. These are usually combined with some mild cleansers and moisturerisers.
  9. Sand particles are irregularly shaped & too hard to use as a face scrub. Sand is basically tiny bits of rock. Use sugar instead. You can rub a packet (about 1tblsp.) of sugar gently against your wet face. Baking soda is another good, natural scrub. Yogurt Mask 1/4-1/3 cup whole milk yogurt 1-2 tsp. honey 1-2 tblsp. powdered oatmeal Mix to make a paste and apply. Leave on for 15-20 minutes. Yogurt has lactic acid to loosen dead skin cells. Honey has anti-bacterial properties. Oatmeal serves as a physical exfoliant. 10. Hi!!!! My mum showed me to use something better than sand to exfoliate your skin. Mix honey or yogurt with SUGAR. Rub onto face, leave for 10 minutes and rinse. Good stuff. Hope I helped!!! Fashion chick!*
