What do you do with a talking cat?
I love my cat. I feed him, play with him, exercise him, on and on and on. We cuddle. He is an Abby but he got an extra dose of Abbyism. He follows me all day and talks. He complains if I don't give him attention 24/7. My partner says I have spoiled him and now he is frozen in perpetual kittenhood. All he wants is me. Not my partner, not the otehr cats, just me. It is kind of getting on my nerves. Sometimes I put him in a separate part of the house (several rooms) but he meows his head off nonstop and can keep it up for hours. I don't want to torture him. What cn I do? I work at home and give all my pets good attention. When I just treat him nicely then he does obnoxious things like try to sit on my keyboard, talk nonstop wile I try to work, protests loudly and longly if I stop petting him! And yes he has been to the vet - thorough checking - who said he is fine. He is an Abyssinian he says, like a dog, what did you expect? We've never had an Abby like THIS!

- Easy. Ignore him. If he keeps bothering you or jumps up where he does not belong, then squirt him with a squirt gun. It'll take time, but he'll learn his place, and the water won't hurt him. If you continue to pander to him, it will always be this way.
- When you need sometime to yourself put him in another room with a can of wet food. does the trick with all my animals. You cant just stop giving him all that attention he is use to it, so slowly wean him of it day by day until its where you want him to be. Also try getting him some toys to play with. hope i helped you.
- Wow, I don't know...you seem to have a big fan! Make a place for him close to you while you work, & maybe he won't sit on your keyboard! Mine did that too, but I worked out of the house & he liked attention too! Good luck!
- i also have a cat like that.all i do is ignore her when she wont stop meowing.
- My cat should be friends with your cat!!! My cat meows ALL THE FREAKING TIME!!!!!!! My friends call her Meowerstien, and my mom goes crazy when she comes over. I learned to ignore it but sometimes I just have to say Sheesh Princess or do you want to go outside or you have enough food. We put her on a 4 ft. leash and a collar outside whenever she won't shut up! It works. Peaceful and quiet.I don't give her 24/7 attention cuz I go to school every other day. But I guess it's not enough for her. You need more help just contact me via email.
- http://www.sfspca.org/behavior/cat_library/excessive_meowing.pdf This is a great article about excessive meowing. It appears your partner may be correct on this issue. Sounds like the cat is a talker anyways, but you have encouraged it and the cat is taking advantage of it. Patience!! If you have raised a child, you know you cannot give into their "tantrums". They eventually learn. Good luck
- I have a bengel who does the same thing follows me around everywhere and always wants attention. If I try to sit down and watch TV he scratches on the TV and tries to push it over. I taught him to play fetch and that gets him tired out so i can get some work done. Otherwise I put him in a harness and take him outside with me so he can explore, by the time we come back in he is ready to sleep and stop pestering me. I also put up a bird feeder by the door so he gets distracted by watching the birds...although he still meows loudly at the birds.
- He obivously has a personality that rcraves some kind of contact with human or cats. I figure he feels insecure, lonely and bored..try another cat on a trial basis see what he does.
- You most certainly have your hands full! I had a talking cat as well. Cats and dogs are great at learning your actions. They know if they talk long and loud enough they will get your love and affection. One, it's great you give your pets so much attention...if only all pets got the love and attention they deserve!! My talking cat would also jump on my keyboard, paw at my leg...it's cute until it's annoying!! When you are working and the cat jumps up, give a little pet and remove him from his "perch". You may have to do this several times, but eventually he will learn. I think cats can understand what you say to a certain extend, so when you are not wanting him to talk and annoy you while working, say "not now" sternly and put him down - doing this whenever it's not the right time may help your issues. Consistancy is key.
- I hope you mean that he meows instead of talking. If not then something is wrong with you!!
- All I can say is that you seem to have a chatter box on your hands. Be thankful he loves you and wants to spend time with you. I have a cat that follows me everywhere and sits at my feet. He's been stepped on more than once. My older kitty who died last year was a chatterbox too, but he loved chatting in the middle of the night while I was trying to sleep. He'd climb up and lay down on my pillow and just chatter away until I woke up an petted him. I miss him.
- I have an abby also! They are big talkers! Once they find a favorite, forget it you are their forever! Our Sam has taken our son as his own! Our son is 18 now and if often gone so the cat walks around and calls him! I actually enjoy it, but can see how constant cat talk would be annoying! I would say to just ignore him, or do the water bottle spray trick? They are very intelligent, he will get it sooner or later! Good Luck
