Why does my Internet keep freezing?

My computer is an old sony with a Windows 98 operating system. It has served my purposes quite nicely, but lately the internet will freeze if I say try an exit facebook or click on a link using on a yahoo site. Some more things about my computer that my be useful is it ticks like a clock for a few minutes at least once a day. It has also started a high pitch whin 24-7 which previously I could only hear when I was on the computer and now I can hear it across the room. These maybe nothing and probably are, but I know the more information the better. I use internet explorer, I do not know which one but it is probably the last one that my system supported. Also one more thing. I believe I have installed the latest version of Yahoo messenger (once again I have no idea which version I actually have or how to check that). Is my system able to support the plug-ins and if so how do I add them?

1. reading the first line was enough...you need to update your system. Also you have to remember the more you download...the slower your system becomes. Check your computer memory space. I suggest even doing a disk fragment to clear some of the clutter and speeding up your system without losing info
